South San Jose fans of Red Lobster’s seafood and cheddar biscuits will have to travel a little farther to get their fix.

The global chain’s location at Almaden Expressway near Blossom Hill Road — in business for 39 years — has closed permanently.

After a review of locations, “We made the incredibly difficult decision to close our restaurant at Almaden Plaza,” a Red Lobster statement issued Tuesday said. “Management teams and team members were given the chance to relocate to other Red Lobster restaurants whenever possible.”

Further, the statement said: “In closing the location. we hope to redeploy and add resources to other locations where we can continue our growth, whether it’s by developing our people in a new way or offering more innovative food choices to our guests.”

Red Lobster operates eight other Bay Area restaurants, including another one in San Jose (Aborn Road) and one in Milpitas (Calaveras Boulevard).

The decision comes a little more than two years after another major seafood restaurant in the Blossom Hill area, the Fish Market, shut down, a victim of the Covid economy.

Red Lobster, which boasts more than 670 restaurants worldwide, closed eight U.S. locations in the last few months in an effort to build back the brand in this post-pandemic era, according to a U.S. Sun business report.
