SAN ANTONIO (September 7, 2023) – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg today declared the month of September to be Library Card Sign-Up Month in the City of San Antonio by signing a mayoral proclamation. The Mayor presented the proclamation to Library Director Ramiro S. Salazar at the start of the City Council A Session meeting. As part of the proclamation, the Mayor urged all San Antonians to visit their local library to sign up for a free library card.

“We are honored to have the support of our Mayor and City Council to invite San Antonians to take advantage of the vast resources available at the library,” said Library Director Ramiro S. Salazar. "The Library’s mission is to enrich and change lives through the transformative power of information, imagination, and ideas. That journey begins with signing up for a free library card.”

San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) offers 30 locations across the city and a collection of about 2 million items. The library’s collection includes books, eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, vinyl records, streaming video, and more. SAPL offers cardholders access to over 100 databases including National Geographic, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Library users also have access to daily programs for all ages, adult education services through the library’s Learn at SAPL program, and more.

Since 1987, the American Library Association (ALA) has observed National Library Card Sign-Up Month during September to motivate children and families across the nation to sign up for a library card. Since it began in the 1980s, thousands of public libraries and schools have participated to increase library membership.

Signing up for a library card is easy and free. Residents of San Antonio and Bexar County can visit any SAPL location with a photo ID and proof of current address, such as a driver’s license or utility bill. Children under 18 are eligible for their own cards if accompanied by a parent or guardian with the proper documents.

Library card registration is also available online. To begin using SAPL’s digital services immediately, fill out the library’s online registration form. Once new patrons have completed the form, they can begin downloading eBook and eAudiobooks on Libby or streaming video on Kanopy. Residents can then stop by any San Antonio Public Library location within 90 days with a photo ID and proof of current address to pick up their physical library card and start checking out physical items.
