Plans for a new grocery store can move forward

The City of Charleston’s Design Review Board gave conceptual approval to plans that will build a new Publix grocery store + redevelop a West Ashley shopping center (located between Old Towne Road and Sam Rittenberg Boulevard).

The board approved the partial demolition of Ashley Landing including the Big Lots and Dollar Tree, along with some vacant spaces like where Red Orchids operated. They also approved the redesign of the shopping center. The new Publix and retail spots are set to replace the demolished section and will be located near Old Towne Road and Charlestowne Drive.

Step one: conceptual review — completed in the city’s first December DRB meeting.
Step two: preliminary review — this is a deep dive into the specifics of the project.
Step three: final review — takes place when most of the testing and design work is complete.

The current Publix (near Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Sumar Street) will stay open until the new one is complete, and plans have yet to be approved for what will happen to the space once vacant.

Faison, the developer, will set the project timeline. Faison has two years to make changes recommended by the board and move to the preliminary review phase.

The Design Review Board meetings are held on the first + third Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m. The next meeting is on Monday, Dec. 18.

News Notes

Civic

The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections will conduct a Special Town Council Election for Kiawah Island to fill an empty council seat. The seat’s term of office will end in November 2025. Early voting runs from Monday, Jan. 16 through Friday, Jan. 26. The special election will happen Tuesday, Jan. 30. (The Town of Kiawah Island)

Wellness

The Charleston County Council unanimously voted last month to change the county’s policy to allow for paid parental leave. Starting in January, employees who’ve worked with the county for a least a year will get up to six weeks of paid leave after giving birth — a non-birthing parent can receive up to two weeks. Biz

Aldi has plans to add a seventh Charleston-area location. The grocery store chain filed to acquire space on Folly Road on James Island (the old Bi-Lo). This makes the second new Aldi site this year. There are already stores in Summerville, North Charleston, Goose Creek, and Mount Pleasant. (The Post and Courier)

Announced

Patriots Point will hold a free Memorial Service aboard the USS Yorktown on Thursday, Dec. 7th at 11 a.m. to mark 87 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor and honor the 25 known South Carolinians lost that day. The service will include wreath-laying, tolling of a bell, and a traditional gun salute. Admissions to the museum will be waived from 10-11 a.m. (WCBD)

Cause

The South Carolina Stingrays collected 14,237 stuffed toys at the annual Teddy Bear Toss Game. After the Rays scored their first goal, fans threw stuffed animals on the ice. The Stingrays will donate the stuffed toys to The Salvation Army, Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Jeans Angels, Ronald McDonald House, and Toys for Tots.

Environment

Two North Atlantic right whales, a mother and calf, were spotted last week near the entrance to Winyah Bay, ~1.5 hours from Charleston. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says this was the first right whale sighted with a newborn calf this winter. (WCBD)

🦪 Recycling, that’s something to shell-ebrate

Did you know the oyster shells you leave on the shucking table could help grow South Carolina’s shoreline if you recycle them?

When you drop off your shells, the State Department of Natural Resources collects them and uses them to rebuild oyster reefs. Fun fact: three bushels equate to ~10 sqft of reef.

Here are five steps from SCDNR to help grow the shorelines.

Keep trash + shells separate.
Use separate bins for shells this will help keep trash out of the water.
Plan a low-waste event.
Avoid single-use plastics or individually wrapped crackers and sauces.
Spread the word.
Let your guests know you plan to recycle the shells, to help rebuild local oyster reefs.
Request a trailer.
SCDNR will provide a trailer or bins for a roast with 20+ bushels.
Drop off shells.
For events with fewer than 20 bushels, you’ll have to drop off the shells at one of SCDNR’s shell recycling locations.
