🛢️ Save this for a rainy day

Did you know Tennessee is one of several states without restrictions on how you capture and use rainwater? Let it rain, let it pour. We’re here to help you put that rain to use.

What's rainwater harvesting?

Building a rainwater harvesting system is an easy way to provide non-potable water for your plants. The best part: After some small start-up costs, it’s free — and we love free.

The system collects water off non-permeable surfaces like your roof and funnels it into a rain barrel or cistern for later use. A general rule of thumb: One inch of rainfall can generate about 60 gallons of water for every 100 sqft of rooftop.

How do I get started?

Metro Water Services typically hosts an annual rain barrel sale, though the sale was skipped in 2026. It’s expected to return in 2027, and you can join the waitlist to be notified when it opens. In the meantime, make your own rain barrel using these tips from MWS. There’s also a video tutorial to guide you through each step.
