Help keep local news brewing

Good morning, Winston-Salem. This November, we’re asking readers to join our coffee club — a monthly gift that keeps our team caffeinated all year long. Just $5 a month supports our mission to write about the most positive local news and events worth your attention. Prefer a one-time gift? That’s welcome, too — whether it’s $10, $50, or $150.

Your contribution goes directly to our Editorial staff (and yes, a percentage of reader gifts actually do fund our coffee runs — it’s an important ingredient in local news curation).

A few reminders about WStoday and our parent company, 6AM City:
  • We believe local news should inform you — not exhaust you. The most positive local news and events worth your attention are thoughtfully curated into our newsletter. You won’t find politics or divisive topics here, just the stories that help you stay connected to your city.
  • We impact readers’ lives. We get hundreds of messages pouring in saying thank you, because being subscribed to WStoday brings you more than just daily updates. We consider it our job to connect you with our city.
  • We eat, breathe, and sleep local news. While our operations span multiple cities, our local Newsletter Editor lives, works, and plays in Winston-Salem, carrying out our mission to highlight the incredible small businesses, non-profits, and city programs you want to hear about.
If you’ve got gratitude to share this November, support us with a recurring contribution and keep Winston-Salem’s good news coming.

Editor's Pick

Your favorite women-owned businesses

Editor Lillian here. You know we love small businesses here at WStoday, so I wanted to shout out Editor Kayla — who writes our weekly business newsletter, BizBrief — for creating a list of women-owned small businesses, all suggested by our readers.

I was delighted to learn that some of the places I've been shopping at for years are women-owned. I've also found some new places to check out (Anne Marie Bridal Designs, I'm looking at you).

Here's a sampling from the list:
37 reader-approved women-owned businesses

The Buy

As temperatures drop, we’re not compromising on style for the sake of comfort and warmth. Luckily, Skechers makes it easy to have all three. Here are three styles we recommend adding to your cold-weather wardrobe:

👟 These suede slip-in booties feature genuine suede treated with Scotchguard to repel water, memory foam cushioning, a soft chenille lining, and chic floral embroidered details.
👞 Great for tackling unpredictable fall + winter weather, we love these John Deere collection men’s slip-in boots, complete with a durable Goodyear outsole + a seam-sealed waterproof design.
🥾 Lastly, these cozy faux fur boots have standout features like high-rebound, responsive cushioning + fixed stretch laces that never come untied.

The Wrap

Here's another women-owned business we'll have to add to our list: The Flawless Skin Company, which helps cancer patients and survivors find comfort and confidence through skincare.

Brittany Jenkins, an oncology-trained esthetician, opened her business after her own mother was diagnosed with colon cancer.
